Our Mission

Our mission is to utilize theatre to understand, acknowledge, and dismantle all forms of systemic oppression as we explore identity and our place in a global community.

A Letter From The Coalescence Theatre Project Team

Coalescence Theatre Project wishes to address recent discussions surrounding Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and his attendance at a recent performance of Measure of a Man.

We begin by expressing our deep respect for Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and for the enduring legacy of his father, Chairman Fred Hampton Sr. This production was created to honor that legacy, the movement he built to empower people across race and class, and the spirit of collective liberation and community uplift that continues to inspire generations today.

That respect has guided our process from the beginning. Months before the production opened, we were introduced to Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., shared a draft of the script, and welcomed his feedback. We also communicated our commitment to make a monetary donation from the proceeds of the production to Save The Hampton House, the initiative led by Chairman Hampton Jr. and his family to preserve Chairman Fred Sr.’s childhood home as a historic landmark and community center. The script and the proposed donation were both accepted with appreciation.

After several months without direct contact, we reconnected with Chairman Hampton Jr. two days before preview performances began on Friday, October 24. That conversation was positive. While he expressed some disappointment about missing the earlier opportunity to provide feedback, we extended an invitation for him, his family, and friends to attend the show as our honored guests at any time during the run.

We also partnered with another legacy organization that has supported efforts to connect the production with their networks and individuals affiliated with the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party and its allies. During this partnership, we learned that Chairman Hampton Jr. has longstanding concerns with that organization and has previously had conflicts with them at public events.

Out of concern for maintaining a respectful and uninterrupted experience for all audience members and theatergoers, Chairman Hampton Jr. was asked to refrain from attending the October 30 performance specifically, as that organization would be present that evening. Unfortunately, this has since been interpreted publicly as Chairman Hampton Jr. being excluded or “locked out” of the production, which was never our intent.

We also want to acknowledge that Raven Theatre, as our host venue, has since received phone calls and negative reviews in response to this misunderstanding. Raven Theatre was not involved in or responsible for the decision regarding Chairman Fred Hampton Jr.’s attendance on October 30. We ask that people refrain from directing frustration toward Raven Theatre or its staff about this incident.

The events of October 30 arose from a misunderstanding, not an exclusion. We recognize how sensitive this story is and how personal it is for so many. Our intention has always been to honor, never to harm. We strive to hold space for truth, legacy, and healing through art. We remain deeply grateful to everyone who continues to support this work, engage with care, and believe in the power of storytelling to bring people together, even in difficult moments.

With gratitude,
The Coalescence Theatre Project Team
